The F-94B Starfire was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard during the 1950s for air defense, seeing combat in the Korean War (1951-1953) as a night fighter and bomber escort, and in Japan to defend air space. It also served as a critical interceptor in Alaska and North America, defending against Soviet bombers.
Key Deployment Locations and Roles:
- Korean War: Stationed in Korea, the F-94B replaced the propeller-driven F-82 Twin Mustang for night air defense and escorted B-29 bombers against night raids.
- Japan: Served for air defense purposes starting in 1951.
- United States (Air Defense Command): Provided air defense for the continental U.S., particularly with Air National Guard units.
- Alaska: Used by the 66th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron at Elmendorf AFB for Arctic defense, 1952.
- Greenland: Deployed to Thule Air Base in 1953 as part of the strategy against Soviet bomber attacks.
Operational Use Summary:
- Role: Primarily an all-weather interceptor used for night fighting and long-distance escort.
