The F-89D Scorpion was primarily used by the United States Air Force Air Defense Command (ADC) during the 1950s as an all-weather interceptor to defend North America from Soviet bombers. Deployed to key regions including Alaska, the northern U.S., and Greenland, it served in 36 USAF and 17 Air National Guard (ANG) squadrons, carrying 2.75-inch rockets to intercept enemy aircraft.
Key Deployment and Usage Locations:
- Northern Defense Zones: Widely used for defending the northern-most regions of the U.S. and Arctic areas like Alaska.
- USAF Bases: Active with interceptor squadrons at various US bases, such as Wurtsmith AFB (Michigan), Paine AFB (Washington), and Portland International Airport.
- Overseas Bases: Deployed at USAF bases in Iceland and Greenland.
- Air National Guard: Served with various ANG units, including South Dakota, Maine, and Montana.
The D-model (and later modified J-models) was characterized by its massive wingtip pods holding rockets for area defense rather than dogfighting. The F-89 remained in service through the 1960s with the ANG, and many saw service in northern areas.
