The F-86F-30 Sabre was a primary air-superiority fighter and fighter-bomber used extensively in the latter stages of the Korean War (1950–1953) to counter MiG-15s, replacing earlier F-80s and F-51s. Following the war, F-86F-30s were widely deployed by the USAF and exported to many nations, serving in Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Argentina, and others.
Key details regarding the F-86F-30 include:
- Combat Use: It featured a "6-3" wing modification (without leading-edge slats) for better high-speed maneuvering, making it highly effective in "MiG Alley".
- Reconnaissance Role: Some F-86Fs were modified into RF-86F "Haymakers" for dangerous, high-speed, low-altitude reconnaissance missions over North Korea and China.
- Global Service: Surplus F-86F-30s were transferred to over a dozen countries, including Taiwan, South Africa, Belgium, Peru, and others through the Mutual Defense Assistance Program.
- Production and Usage: The F-86F-30 was produced in the US, with some also built under license by Mitsubishi in Japan. They remained in active service until the 1980s and 1990s in some air forces.
