The F-84G Thunderjet (early variant) was primarily used by the US Air Force during the Korean War (1951–1953) as a key fighter-bomber and the first USAF operational nuclear strike fighter. It served extensively in Korea as a long-range escort and for close air support, and was later adopted by various NATO countries and allies, including Portugal, France, Italy, and Taiwan throughout the 1950s.
Key Usage and Deployment:
- Korean War: The F-84G was utilized heavily from 1951 for tactical missions, including bombing railroads, bridges, and supply depots.
- Nuclear Strike Capability: The F-84G was the first USAF fighter capable of delivering nuclear weapons (using the MARK 7 bomb).
- NATO and Allies: Under the Mutual Security Program, the F-84G was supplied to numerous nations, with use extending into the 1970s in some cases (e.g., Portugal, 1976).
- Aerial Demonstration: The F-84G was the first aircraft flown by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds in 1953.
The F-84G is distinguishable by its introduction of the refueling receptacle for in-flight refueling.
