The F-84F Thunderstreak was a swept-wing fighter-bomber used primarily by the United States Air Force and NATO allies from 1954 to the early 1970s, with some nations operating them into the 1990s. Key operators included the US Air Force/ANG, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and Greece, often deployed in Europe as a nuclear deterrent during the Cold War.
Key Usage and Deployment Areas:
- United States Air Force/ANG: Introduced in 1954, it was used by the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and later extensively by the Air National Guard (ANG) until 1972.
- European Deployment: In 1961, 200 F-84Fs were deployed to Europe to support the Berlin Crisis response.
- NATO Allied Forces: Germany (Luftwaffe), Italy, and Belgium were major operators. Greece used their aircraft until 1991.
- Roles: While the early straight-wing Thunderjet was used in Korea, the F-84F "late" swept-wing variant served primarily as a fighter-bomber, photo-reconnaissance (RF-84F), and tactical nuclear strike platform in Europe.
- Other Operators: France, Denmark, Greece, Iran, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Taiwan, Thailand, and Yugoslavia also used various F-84 models, including the F-84F.
The F-84F was designed to improve on the speed and capability of the original straight-wing Thunderjet and was known as a "stoic soldier" during the early Cold War era.
