The F-82G Twin Mustang, equipped with a center-wing radar pod for all-weather interception, was primarily used in the early stages of the Korean War (1950–1953), based out of Japan to conduct combat air patrols and ground attacks. They also served in Alaska with the 449th Fighter (All Weather) Squadron for defensive patrols.

Key Deployment Details:

  • Korean War Role: Japan-based F-82G models were among the first U.S. aircraft to operate over Korea. They were used for long-range bomber escort, night interdiction, and ground attack.
  • First Kill: On June 27, 1950, F-82Gs from the 68th Fighter (All-Weather) Squadron, based in Japan, shot down the first three North Korean aircraft of the war.
  • Radar Pod Operation: The F-82G carried a large SCR-720 radar pod under the center wing, designed for intercepting enemy aircraft in night or poor weather conditions.
  • Alaska Patrols: Modified F-82F/G/H models were used to patrol the Alaska wilderness between 1948 and 1953 due to their long-range capabilities.
  • Replacement: By 1951-1952, they were largely replaced in Korea by jet fighters like the F-86 Saber and F-94 Starfire.
