The F-82E Twin Mustang was primarily used by the United States Air Force (USAF) as a long-range escort fighter and all-weather interceptor, appearing too late for World War II but serving extensively in the Korean War. It was stationed at Kearney Air Force Base, Nebraska, Alaska, Japan, and the Panama Canal Zone, primarily defending against Cold War threats before being replaced by jets in the early 1950s.
Key Usage and Deployment Areas:
- Strategic Air Command (SAC): Beginning in March 1948, F-82Es were stationed at Kearney AFB, Nebraska, as long-range escort fighters to protect bombers.
- Korean War: Japan-based F-82s (including E, F, and G models) were among the first USAF aircraft to operate over Korea, often performing escort missions and providing vital, long-range all-weather combat capabilities.
- Air Defense Command (ADC): Used to defend the East and West Coasts of the United States, as well as in Alaska for cold-weather operations.
- Panama Canal Zone: Deployed for territorial defense.
The F-82 was designed to escort B-29 bombers on long missions but became the last American piston-engined fighter produced for the Air Force.
