The F-4S Phantom II was an upgraded F-4J variant used primarily by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s, serving extensively in fleet air defense and training roles. Notable units included Marine Fighter Attack Squadrons (VMFA) in Hawaii and California, such as VMFA-235, VMFA-212, and VMFA-251, along with Navy carrier training roles.
Key Operational Details:
- Upgrade & Usage: The F-4S was an F-4J upgrade featuring smokeless engines, strengthened airframes, and improved maneuverability (leading-edge slats) to extend the life of the aircraft in the 1980s.
- US Marine Corps (USMC): Served as a key fighter-bomber for the Marine Corps, notably deployed in Hawaii (MCAS Kaneohe Bay) and California (MCAS Beaufort, MCAS El Toro) by units like VMFA-212 and VMFA-235 until the mid-1980s.
- US Navy: Reworked at North Island, California, the F-4S was used for fleet training and by reserve squadrons before being fully replaced by the F/A-18 Hornet.
- Service History: While the F-4J model saw extensive combat in Vietnam, the upgraded F-4S served in the post-Vietnam era to maintain air superiority until the late 1980s, with some airframes later becoming QF-4S target drones.
The F-4S was essentially a "refreshed" F-4J, designed to be the final, most agile version of the Navy/Marine Phantom II, with many examples originating from the 1969-1970 F-4J production run.
