The F-4J Phantom II was primarily used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps as an advanced carrier-based fighter-bomber and interceptor, starting in the mid-1960s. It was used extensively in combat during the Vietnam War (notably Operations Rolling Thunder and Linebacker) and by the Blue Angels flight demonstration team.
Key Areas of Use for the F-4J Variant:
- Vietnam War (1960s–1973): Served as a primary air superiority fighter for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, often operating from aircraft carriers like the USS Constellation and USS America.
- Marine Corps Base Defense: Deployed to locations like Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, for close air support and reconnaissance, according to this YouTube video.
- Flight Demonstration: Used by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels from 1969 to 1974.
Evolution and Service Life:
- Upgrades: Many F-4J models were later upgraded to the F-4S configuration in the 1970s and 1980s.
- Replacement: The F-4J was gradually replaced in the late 1970s and 1980s by the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet.
- Foreign Usage: While the F-4J was specifically a U.S. Navy/Marine variant, the wider F-4 Phantom family was used by 11 other nations, including Israel and Iran.
The F-4J was known for its "look-down/shoot-down" radar capability, making it superior for intercepting aircraft at lower altitudes than previous models.
