The F-4G Phantom II "Wild Weasel" was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force from 1978 to 1996 for Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). It played a critical role in the 1991 Gulf War, with bases in Bahrain, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, and was stationed at Spangdahlem AB (Germany), George AFB (California), and Clark AB (Philippines).
Key Deployment Areas and Conflicts:
- Operation Desert Storm (1991): The F-4G's major combat role, where 35th and 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing units flew 3,942 sorties and destroyed over 200 Iraqi anti-aircraft sites.
- Europe (Spangdahlem AB): The 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing maintained F-4Gs in Germany to counter Warsaw Pact radars until 1994.
- Pacific (Clark AB & Misawa AB): F-4Gs were stationed in the Philippines and Japan to provide deterrence against North Korean radar sites.
- United States (George AFB): Served as the primary training and operations base for F-4G Wild Weasel training throughout the 1980s.
Note on Early Variant:
- A separate, limited batch of 12 Navy F-4B aircraft were redesignated F-4G in 1963 and served in Vietnam (1965–1966) with VF-213, entirely distinct from this later Air Force "Wild Weasel" F-4G.
