The F-4C Phantom II was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force in Southeast Asia starting in 1965 for air superiority and ground attack missions during the Vietnam War. It was based at sites like Cam Ranh Bay and Da Nang in South Vietnam. Beyond Vietnam, it served at bases in Japan and the U.S. until the 1990s.

Key Deployment and Usage Areas:

  • Vietnam War: The F-4C was the first USAF variant sent to Southeast Asia, where it escorted bombers, flew fighter-bomber ground attack missions, and fought enemy MiGs.
  • Air Force Bases (Global):
    • South Vietnam: Cam Ranh Bay Air Base and Da Nang Air Base.
    • Japan: Yokota Air Base.
    • United States: George AFB, California (479th and 35th Tactical Fighter Wings) and Luke AFB, Arizona (58th Tactical Fighter Wing).
  • Air National Guard: After active combat duty, F-4Cs were used by units such as the Hawaii Air National Guard.
