The F-104G Starfighter was primarily used by West Germany (Luftwaffe and Marineflieger) as its major multirole combat aircraft during the Cold War (1960s–80s). It was also heavily used by NATO nations including Italy, Turkey, Greece, and the Netherlands, with further usage in Canada, Taiwan, and by NASA for research.
Primary Users and Roles of the F-104G:
- West Germany (Luftwaffe) (916 aircraft): Used as the primary fighter-bomber, tactical reconnaissance, and interceptor plane, often in low-level flight profiles.
- West German Navy (Marineflieger): Employed in maritime strike and reconnaissance roles.
- Other Major Operators: Italy, Turkey, Greece, Netherlands, and Canada.
- NASA (.gov): Used as chase and support aircraft.
The F-104G was developed specifically to meet European requirements for a multirole aircraft capable of all-weather interception, tactical reconnaissance, and ground attack. The F-104G, which was heavily utilized in Europe as a fighter-bomber, was later retired from most roles by the late 1980s, though Italy flew the Starfighter until 2004.
