The F-104C Starfighter was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) as a supersonic interceptor and fighter-bomber, notably serving in the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967. Deployed with the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing, it served in Southeast Asia (Vietnam and Thailand) and was stationed at bases in California and Spain. It was designed for air superiority but was used for ground support, airstrikes, and escort missions.
Key operational details of the F-104C:
- Vietnam War: Stationed at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, 1965–1967, to conduct air superiority, combat air patrol, and close air support.
- USAF Service: Primarily operated by the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing out of George Air Force Base, California.
- International/Other Roles: While the C-model was a US variant, F-104s were used by NATO allies including West Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan.
- Deployment: Involved in Operation Iron Hand against North Vietnamese missile sites.
The F-104C was designed for high-speed, high-altitude missions but was used for diverse roles due to its high speed, with 14 of the aircraft lost in combat/accidents during its time in Southeast Asia.
