The A-20G Havoc was primarily used as a low-level attack bomber and strafer by Allied forces during World War II, most notably in the Southwest Pacific (New Guinea, Philippines) for shipping strikes, and by the Soviet Union via Lend-Lease. It was also deployed in North Africa and Europe for bombing and intruder missions.
Key Operational Areas and Uses:
- Southwest Pacific: U.S. 5th Air Force units, such as the 312th Bomb Group ("Roarin' 20s"), used A-20Gs for low-altitude attacks against Japanese airfields and shipping. They were effective with their solid nose, which housed six to eight .50-caliber machine guns for strafing.
- Soviet Union (Lend-Lease): A significant portion of A-20G production was sent to the Soviet Air Force (VVS), where they were heavily used as light bombers.
- North Africa & Mediterranean: Used by the USAAF for ground support, particularly in 1942–1943.
- Europe: Used by the 9th Air Force and RAF for bombing and night intruder missions, with some converted into night fighters.
The A-20G was a key variant, replacing the earlier bombardier-nose version with a heavily armed "solid" gun nose to maximize damage to ground targets.
