Historical Information

Ryujo was a purpose-built light aircraft carrier whose construction began at Mitsubishi's Yokohama yard and was completed at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. Commissioned in 1933, she served extensively before and during the Pacific War despite her small size and top-heavy design.

  • Builder / Commissioning: Construction began at Mitsubishi's Yokohama yard and was completed at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal; commissioned in 1933.
  • Entry into Service: Entered service as a light carrier intended to expand Japanese carrier aviation within treaty limitations.
  • Major Campaigns: Operations in China, the opening Pacific offensives, the Aleutians, and the Guadalcanal campaign.
  • Notable Operations: Provided air support in numerous prewar and wartime operations and took part in the Aleutian phase of the Midway campaign.
  • Combat Service: Saw repeated operational use until the Battle of the Eastern Solomons.
  • Fate / Postwar Disposition: Sunk by U.S. carrier aircraft during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons on 24 August 1942.
