Historically accurate 1-2400 scale escort aircraft carrier deck decal representing IJN Chiyoda & Chitose (CVE) in the Standard Deck Version configuration.

Historical Information

Chitose and Chiyoda were originally built as seaplane tenders and were converted into light aircraft carriers during the later stages of the Pacific War. Their conversions reflected Japan's urgent effort to replace carrier losses and expand flight-deck capacity.

Key Historical Details:

  • Builder / Commissioning: Originally completed as seaplane tenders and converted into light carriers during 1943-44.
  • Entry into Service: Entered carrier service late in the war, after the loss of much of Japan's experienced carrier air arm.
  • Major Campaigns: Battle of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf.
  • Notable Operations: Both served with Japanese carrier forces in 1944, including Ozawa's decoy force during the Leyte Gulf operation.
  • Combat Service: Saw combat in the final major Japanese carrier operations of 1944.
  • Fate / Postwar Disposition: Both were lost on 25 October 1944 during the Battle off Cape Engano—Chitose to U.S. carrier aircraft and Chiyoda after air attack and subsequent surface gunfire.
