The Tupolev Tu-22M3 "Backfire" has been primarily used by the Soviet Union (starting in the 1980s) and Russia as a long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber. It saw combat in Afghanistan (1987–1989), Chechnya (1995), Syria (starting 2015), and extensively during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine for missile strikes

 

Key Areas of Operational Use:

  • Afghanistan (1987-1989): Used for conventional bombing against mujahideen positions.
  • Chechnya (1995): Employed in bombing missions.
  • Syrian Civil War: Used by the Russian Air Force to strike ground targets.
  • Invasion of Ukraine (2022-present): Utilized for long-range, stand-off missile attacks (specifically using Kh-22 missiles) against targets in Ukraine, including Mariupol and the Donbas region. 

     

Operational Context:

  • Role: Primarily acts as a long-range strategic bomber, part of Russia's nuclear deterrence, and a maritime strike platform.
  • Deployment: Operated by the Soviet/Russian Air Force and Naval Aviation.
  • Capabilities: Capable of speeds over  and carrying 12 tons of ordnance, including nuclear-capable missiles. 

 

The aircraft was also exported in limited numbers to Iraq and Libya, although the M3 variant is predominantly associated with Soviet/Russian service.
