Historical Context
The Saab JA 37 Viggen was the dedicated fighter and interceptor version of the Viggen family. Developed to replace the Saab 35 Draken in the air-defense role, it combined the basic Viggen airframe with a more powerful engine, advanced radar, improved avionics, and weapons optimized for interception.
The JA 37 entered Swedish service in the late 1970s and became the country's principal air-defense fighter before the arrival of the JAS 39 Gripen.
