The B-25H Mitchell, a cannon-armed variant of the famous WWII medium bomber, was primarily used for low-level ground attack, anti-shipping, and bomber roles across all theaters of war, particularly in the Pacific and China-Burma-India (CBI) regions. It was, for example, utilized by the 1st Air Commando Group in the CBI theater for close air support.
- Key Operational Use: The B-25H was designed for heavy firepower, replacing the Plexiglas nose with a 75mm cannon and four .50-caliber machine guns, plus additional gun packs.
- Pacific & CBI Theaters: Heavily used for attacking Japanese shipping, airfields, and, specifically in Burma, destroying bridges to disrupt supply lines.
- Other Theaters: While the J-model was more common, H-models saw service in the Mediterranean and for coastal patrols.
- Role Versatility: Beyond bombing, it was used for strafing, recon, and anti-submarine patrols.
The H-model was particularly effective in jungle environments where low-level attack was preferred over high-altitude bombing.
