Historical Background
The Nieuport 28 was a French-designed single-seat fighter developed during 1917. Unlike the earlier Nieuport sesquiplanes, it used a more conventional biplane wing arrangement and a more powerful rotary engine.
Although the French selected the SPAD XIII for their main front-line fighter units, the Nieuport 28 became famous in 1918 as the first operational fighter used by American pursuit squadrons under American command.
