The F-111 Aardvark was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) from 1967 to the mid-1990s, with key roles in the Vietnam War (4,000+ combat missions), Operation El Dorado Canyon (Libya, 1986), and Operation Desert Storm (1991). It was celebrated for precision, low-level night strikes using Pave Tack laser-guided bombs.
Key Areas of Operation:
- Vietnam War (1968, 1972-1973): Used in Operation Combat Lancer (1968) and later, with improved results, in Operations Linebacker and Linebacker II. Known as "Whispering Death" to North Vietnamese troops, it flew over 4,000 sorties with only six combat losses.
- Operation El Dorado Canyon (Libya, 1986): F-111s from RAF Lakenheath (UK) flew a 6,400-mile round trip to attack targets in Tripoli, chosen for their superior speed and capability over carrier-based aircraft.
- Operation Desert Storm (1991): F-111Fs were highly effective in Iraq, destroying roughly 1,500 Iraqi tanks and armored vehicles using laser-guided bombs, a technique often called "tank plinking".
- Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF): The RAAF operated the F-111C from 1973 to 2010. While they did not see active combat, they served as a regional deterrent and were used for surveillance and deterrence, including during the Australian-led East Timor mission.
Key Locations:
- Southeast Asia: Thailand (Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base).
- United Kingdom: RAF Lakenheath and RAF Upper Heyford.
- USA: Nellis Air Force Base (NV), Mountain Home Air Force Base (ID).
The F-111 was formally retired by the USAF in 1996, with the Australian F-111s taking their last flight in 2010.
