The F-104A Starfighter was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) as an interceptor from 1958 to 1969, with later service in the Air National Guard until 1975. It was also operated by Pakistan, Jordan, Taiwan, and NASA. It saw combat in the Taiwan Strait Crisis, Vietnam War, and Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.

  • U.S. Service: The USAF used the F-104A for high-speed, high-altitude interception with the Air Defense Command.
  • Combat Usage: The F-104A was deployed to Southeast Asia for the Vietnam War for limited combat air patrol. It was also utilized by the Pakistan Air Force during the 1965 war.
  • Export Users: Jordan, Pakistan, and Taiwan acquired the F-104A variant specifically.
  • NASA Research: NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center used F-104s, including the early "A" models, for 38 years as chase and test aircraft, specifically for research supporting the X-15 program.
  • Other Operators: While the F-104G was more common in Europe, nations like West Germany, Canada, Italy, and Japan operated later versions of the F-104.

The F-104A was known for its incredible speed, holding both altitude and speed records in 1958.
