The B-52G Stratofortress was used as a long-range strategic bomber during the Cold War and in major combat operations from 1959 until 1994, notably serving in the Vietnam War (Operation Linebacker II) and the Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm). It was operated by Strategic Air Command at numerous bases globally.

  • Vietnam War: B-52G models were used for conventional bombing missions, including Operation Linebacker II in 1972, often stationed at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.
  • Persian Gulf War (1991): B-52Gs were heavily utilized to strike strategic targets, flying missions from bases in the U.S. and Diego Garcia.
  • Cold War Role: Served as a primary nuclear deterrent and stand-off cruise missile platform (carrying AGM-28 Hound Dog and later AGM-86 ALCM).
  • Retirement: Most G-models were destroyed by 1994 to comply with arms reduction treaties, though some were sent to museums.
  • Key Bases: Served with SAC bomb wings at bases such as Barksdale AFB (Louisiana), Robins AFB (Georgia), and Andersen AFB (Guam).

The B-52G is distinguished by its shorter tail fin and a 20-foot wing-integrated fuel tank ("wet wing") compared to earlier models.
