F2A2 Brewster Buffalo
From $2.52Price
The Brewster F2A Buffalo was primarily used early in WWII by Finland (most effectively), the U.S. Navy/Marine Corps, and British/Dutch forces in Southeast Asia. While it served as a stopgap fighter at Midway and in the Pacific, its most notable success was with the Finnish Air Force, where it achieved high kill ratios against Soviet aircraft between 1941 and 1945.
Key Operational Locations and Users:
- Finland (B-239 variant): Used extensively in the Continuation War against the Soviet Union, where it was highly successful (26:1 kill ratio) and nicknamed "Taivaan helmi" (Sky Pearl).
- Pacific Theater (USN/USMC): Served with Fighting Squadron 2 (VF-2) on the USS Lexington and VMF-221 during the Battle of Midway (1942), where it suffered heavy losses against Japanese Zeros.
- Southeast Asia (RAF/RAAF/RNLAF): Used by British, Australian, and Dutch forces in Malaya, Singapore, and the Dutch East Indies against Japan.
- Training: Due to its poor performance against modern fighters, many U.S.-operated Buffalos were relegated to advanced training roles in the US mainland.
The F2A-2 and F2A-3 models were the primary iterations used by U.S. forces, while the B-239 export model was used by Finland.
