P-39 Airacobra Export Variant
From $2.52Price
The P-39 Airacobra export variant, often designated the P-400, was used primarily in the early Pacific theater (1942–1943) by U.S. forces (specifically in Guadalcanal as part of the "Cactus Air Force" and New Guinea), the Royal Air Force (RAF), and the Soviet Air Force. These aircraft were also utilized by the Free French in North Africa and the Mediterranean.
Key Deployment Locations and Roles:
- Pacific Theater (Guadalcanal/New Guinea): Known as the P-400, these were used by the U.S. Army Air Force and Marine Corps for ground-attack missions against Japanese forces.
- Soviet Union: Through Lend-Lease, a massive number of P-39s were used on the Eastern Front as effective low-altitude fighters and ground-attack "tank busters".
- Mediterranean: Used by the Free French and Allied forces in North Africa and Italy.
- Alaska/Aleutians: Deployed for defense against Japanese forces.
While originally intended as a high-altitude interceptor, the export P-39s lacked superchargers, leading to their, ultimately successful, reassignment to lower-altitude ground support and combat in these theaters.
