The Convair B-58 Hustler, the first operational supersonic bomber, was used exclusively by the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command (SAC) between 1960 and 1970. It was based at Carswell AFB (Texas), Little Rock AFB (Arkansas), and Bunker Hill/Grissom AFB (Indiana). Its primary role was high-speed, high-altitude nuclear deterrence.
Key Operational Locations:
- 43rd Bombardment Wing: Initially Carswell AFB, TX (1960–1964), then moved to Little Rock AFB, AR (1964–1970).
- 305th Bombardment Wing: Bunker Hill/Grissom AFB, IN (1961–1970).
- Test & Development: Edwards AFB, CA (Air Force Flight Test Center).
Major Records and Usage:
- Speed Records: Set 19 world speed and altitude records, including a 1962 Los Angeles-to-New York-and-back flight.
- International Flights: Famous for high-speed missions, such as Tokyo-to-London (1963) in under 9 hours.
- Cold War Duty: Served strictly as a high-altitude strategic bomber and was not used in combat operations in Vietnam.
Retirement:
- Following its service, the aircraft was officially retired in 1970, with many being stored at the "Boneyard" at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ.
