The B-17E Flying Fortress was heavily deployed in all major World War II theaters from early 1942, acting as a crucial long-range heavy bomber. Key deployment areas included daylight raids over Germany, supporting operations in the Mediterranean (Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy), and early, crucial combat in the Pacific against Japanese shipping.

Key Deployment and Operational Details:

  • European Theater (ETO): Served as a primary component of the Eighth and Fifteenth Air Forces, flying from England and Italy to attack industrial targets in Germany, France, and Austria.
  • Mediterranean Theater (MTO): Used against Axis targets in North Africa and for the invasions of Sicily and Italy.
  • Pacific Theater: Operated early in the war from Australia and Hawaii to conduct raids against Japanese airfields and shipping.
  • Routes: Flown across the Atlantic via the "treacherous northern air route" from the U.S. to England.

The B-17E was the first mass-produced model designed for combat, featuring a larger tail fin for better stability and increased defensive firepower.
