From $8.71Price

The B-17D Flying Fortress, most famously represented by the surviving aircraft "The Swoose," was used primarily in the Pacific Theater during the early stages of World War II, including the defense of the Philippines (1941–1942) and later as a VIP transport.

Key Operational Details:

  • Pacific Theater: Operated by the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) in early combat missions, including actions against Japanese forces in the Philippines and in the Dutch East Indies.
  • Combat Service: Known for participating in some of the first U.S. combat missions in the Philippines in 1941–1942, with one B-17D (40-3097, The Swoose) surviving from the initial 1941 force.
  • Later Roles: Following front-line duty, some B-17Ds were used as VIP transports, including for Lt. Gen. George Brett.
  • Japanese Use: At least one B-17D was captured by the Japanese, used for technical evaluation, and filmed at Tachikawa Airfield.

The B-17D was the last model to feature the "shark-fin" tail and the under-fuselage "bathtub" gun mount.
