The Avro Lancaster B.III Special “Dambuster” was primarily used for Operation Chastise on the night of May 16-17, 1943. 19 aircraft from the RAF's 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton to attack hydroelectric dams in Germany’s Ruhr valley, specifically targeting the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams.

Key Details of Operation:

  • Targeted Dams: The Möhne and Eder dams were breached, while the Sorpe dam sustained minor damage.
  • Method: The aircraft, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, flew at extremely low altitudes (approx. 60 feet) to drop specialized {"bouncing bombs"} (code-named Upkeep).
  • Training Grounds: Before the raid, crews practiced at reservoirs in the UK, including Derwent Reservoir, Abberton Reservoir, and Fleet Lagoon.
  • Impact: The raid aimed to cripple German war industry, specifically targeting dams that powered steel production in the Ruhr valley.

Following the raid, some of these specialized Lancasters were used for further trials at Ashley Walk bombing range in the New Forest.
