The Aichi E13A "Jake" was a primary Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) long-range reconnaissance seaplane used extensively across the Pacific theater from 1941 to 1945. It operated from ships, cruisers, and land bases for scouting, bombing, anti-submarine patrols, and kamikaze missions. Key locations included Pearl Harbor, the Solomon Islands, China, and the Philippines.

Key Usage Areas and Roles:

  • China (1940-1941): Used early in the war for patrols and attacks on the Canton-Hankow railway, operating from seaplane tenders and cruisers.
  • Pearl Harbor (Dec 1941): Conducted critical pre-attack reconnaissance.
  • Pacific Theater (1942-1945): Served in major battles, including the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway.
  • Solomon Islands & New Britain: Operated from land bases and ships, often nicknamed "Washing Machine Charlie" for night harassment attacks.
  • Coastal Patrol & Rescue: Used for patrols, scouting, castaway rescues, and transportation across the Pacific.
  • Special Operations: In the final months, "Jakes" were employed in kamikaze suicide missions.
