The Douglas A1-E Skyraider (previously AD-5), featuring a distinct side-by-side cockpit, was heavily used by the US Air Force and Republic of Vietnam Air Force during the Vietnam War for close air support and search and rescue (SAR) missions. They primarily operated from bases in South Vietnam and Thailand, starting in 1964, providing critical, low-speed fire support for ground troops and "Jolly Green Giant" helicopters.
Key details regarding the A-1E Skyraider usage:
- Vietnam War Focus: The USAF operated around 150 A-1E/A-1J models, specializing in counterinsurgency, fire suppression for rescue operations, and supporting special operations teams.
- Cockpit Configuration: The A-1E/AD-5 design allowed for two pilots side-by-side, enhancing effectiveness for combat missions.
- Roles: Often called "Sandy" or "Spad," they were used to escort helicopter rescue missions, protect ground outposts, and destroy enemy supply lines.
- Replacement: By the late 1960s, these aircraft were heavily utilized to assist in rescuing downed aircrews and protecting helicopter insertion teams, serving until the early 1970s.
