The A-7E Corsair II, a carrier-based attack aircraft, was primarily used by the U.S. Navy from the late 1960s through 1991, with its combat debut in the Vietnam War. It played a major role in the Vietnam War, and subsequent operations including Grenada, Lebanon, Libya (1986), Panama, and Operation Desert Storm in 1991.

  • Vietnam War: The A-7E (introduced in 1970) served as a primary light-attack aircraft for the U.S. Navy and Navy.
  • Libya (1986): A-7Es participated in the 1986 Gulf of Sidra actions and Operation El Dorado Canyon.
  • Operation Desert Storm (1991): In its final combat deployment, VA-46 and VA-72 (from the USS John F. Kennedy) performed night strikes and precision attacks against Iraq.
  • Grenada and Panama: The aircraft was used during the 1983 invasion of Grenada and the 1989 invasion of Panama.
  • Other Use: The A-7E was exported to Greece.
  • A-7D Variant: The USAF used the A-7D variant for, among other things, training and supporting the development of the F-117 stealth fighter program.

It was widely recognized for its high bomb load capacity and precision delivery, earning the nickname "SLUF" (Short Little Ugly Fella).
