Historical Information
The USS Wasp (CV-7) was the sole member of her class and was commissioned on April 25, 1940. Designed within the remaining carrier tonnage permitted by naval treaties, she was smaller than the Yorktown-class carriers.
Wasp initially served in the Atlantic and twice ferried British Spitfires to Malta. Transferred to the Pacific in 1942, she supported the Guadalcanal campaign until torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-19 caused uncontrollable fires and forced her abandonment.
