The Panavia Tornado F3 ADV (Air Defence Variant) is a long-range, twin-engine interceptor aircraft developed by the European Panavia consortium for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Designed to intercept Soviet bombers over the North Sea, it entered service in 1986 and remained the UK's primary interceptor until it was replaced by the Eurofighter Typhoon in the early 2010s.
Key Features and Performance
- Role: Specialized interceptor optimized for high-speed, long-range patrols and beyond-visual-range (BVR) engagements.
- Engines: Powered by two Turbo-Union RB199 Mk 104 engines, which were specifically optimized for high-altitude performance with longer afterburner tailpipes.
- Avionics: Features the Foxhunter radar and an automatic wing sweep control system, which adjusts wing geometry for optimal flight characteristics.
- Armament: Standard loadout included four semi-active Skyflash (later upgraded to AMRAAM) and four Sidewinder missiles, plus a single 27mm Mauser cannon.
- Top Speed: Capable of reaching Mach 2.2 at altitude.
Operational Service
- United Kingdom: Operated primarily by the RAF. It saw its combat debut in the 1991 Gulf War and later participated in operations over Bosnia, Yugoslavia, and Iraq.
- Italy: The Italian Air Force leased 24 RAF Tornado F3s between 1995 and 2004 as a stop-gap before receiving the Typhoon.
- Saudi Arabia: Purchased 24 ADVs as part of the Al-Yamamah arms deal.
