The Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard is a French carrier-borne strike fighter that first flew in October 1974 and entered service in 1978. It was developed as a, improved version of the Étendard IVM, featuring a new engine and advanced avionics for the French Navy. Renowned for its role in the 1982 Falklands War, it was also used by Iraq and served with the French Navy until 2016.
Key Aspects of the Super Étendard History:
- Development and Origin: Developed in the 1970s by Dassault-Breguet to replace the aging Étendard IVM after the SEPECAT Jaguar M naval project faced issues. It featured a SNECMA Atar 8K-50 engine and Agave radar, providing improved range and capabilities.
- Operational History:
- French Navy: Operated from 1978 to 2016, deployed in the Kosovo War, Afghanistan, and Libya.
- Falklands War (1982): Operated by the Argentine Navy, it gained international fame by using Exocet missiles to strike British vessels, including the HMS Sheffield.
- Iraq-Iran War: Iraq leased five Super Étendards between 1983 and 1985 for anti-shipping strikes in the Persian Gulf.
- Upgrades and Retirement: The aircraft was modernized into the Super Étendard Modernisé (SEM) in the 1990s. It was replaced in French service by the Rafale M in 2016. Argentina was the final operator, with their units being retired by 2023.
- Design Specifications: A single-seat, carrier-based aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons and the AM-39 Exocet anti-ship missile.
A total of 71 aircraft were built for France, with Argentina receiving 14.
