P-47d Thunderbolt

PriceFrom $2.85

The P-47D Thunderbolt was used extensively in every theater of World War II, primarily by the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) as a premier long-range escort fighter over Europe and a versatile fighter-bomber in the Pacific, China-Burma-India (CBI), and Mediterranean theaters. It supported Allied ground forces during the invasion of Europe and was widely used by the RAF, France, and the Soviet Union.

Key Deployment and Usage Areas:

  • European Theater (ETO): The P-47D was essential as a high-altitude bomber escort, protecting B-17s and B-24s deep into Germany, and later became a dominant low-level ground-attack fighter, destroying thousands of trains, trucks, and armored vehicles.
  • Pacific Theater (PTO): Used for both high-altitude bomber escort and low-level, long-range ground support, particularly in the Southwest Pacific.
  • China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater: Employed effectively in Burma for ground-attack, though used less extensively in China due to fuel restrictions.
  • Mediterranean Theater (MTO): Served as a ground-attack fighter and bomber escort, particularly starting in early 1944.

Post-WWII Usage:
The P-47D (and later models) continued serving with the U.S. Air Force and National Guard until 1949. It was also used by many nations during the 1950s and into the 1960s, including in Latin American countries such as Peru, which utilized them until 1966.
