The Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" was the primary carrier-based torpedo bomber for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) during the early years of World War II, used extensively from 1939 to 1945. It spearheaded major strikes including Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea, Midway, and the Battle of Santa Cruz, and was later used for anti-submarine, training, and kamikaze missions.

Key Operational Areas and Battles:

  • Pearl Harbor (Dec 1941): Used for the initial attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet, where they were credited with hitting several battleships.
  • Battle of the Coral Sea (May 1942): Played a major role in sinking the USS Lexington.
  • Battle of Midway (June 1942): Key in the attack that resulted in the sinking of the USS Yorktown.
  • Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands (Oct 1942): Used in the attack that sank the USS Hornet.
  • Pacific Theater Campaigns: Operated throughout the South Pacific, including the invasion of Malaya and the defense of the Philippines.

Other Roles and Usage:

  • Sino-Japanese War: First saw combat in China, operating from land bases for ground support.
  • Reconnaissance & Anti-submarine: Later in the war, served in secondary roles, often equipped with radar and magnetic anomaly detectors.
  • Kamikaze Attacks: In the final stages of the war, remaining B5N2s were utilized in suicide missions.

Despite being outdated by 1943-1944, the "Kate" remained in service due to a lack of replacements, often facing high attrition rates against improved Allied defenses.
