The Mitsubishi J2M3 "Raiden" (Allied reporting name "Jack") was primarily used by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service as a high-altitude land-based interceptor to defend the Japanese home islands against B-29 Superfortress bombers from 1944 to 1945. It was operated in small numbers by various units, including the 302nd Naval Air Group (Atsugi), 352nd Naval Air Group (Ohmura), and in the Philippines, Korea, and Taiwan. 

 

Key deployment areas and combat notes include:

  • Japan Home Islands: Primarily used by the 302nd Kokutai at Atsugi Air Base for defense of the Kanto area, including Tokyo.
  • Korea: Deployed to airfields at Genzan (Wonsan), Ranan (Nanam), Funei (Nuren), and Konan, primarily to fight Soviet aircraft.
  • Combat Debut: Made its debut in June 1944 during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, with units operating from Guam and Saipan.
  • Final Actions: Participated in one of the final aerial battles of the war on August 15, 1945.
  • Performance: Despite having4x20mm cannons, its effectiveness was limited due to a lack of supercharging at high altitudes and small production numbers (621 total, including all variants).
