The Mitsubishi G3M2 "Nell" was a primary Imperial Japanese Navy land-based medium bomber used extensively from 1937 to 1945. It operated across the Pacific Theater, including the Second Sino-Japanese War, the1941 attack on Malaya (sinking HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse), and campaigns in Wake Island, Singapore, and the Philippines.
Key Operational Areas and Roles:
- China (1937–1941): Used during the Second Sino-Japanese War for long-range bombing, operating from bases in Taiwan, Kyushu, and Jeju Island.
- Malaya and Singapore (1941–1942): Operated by the Genzan Kokutai from Saigon, Indochina, to attack British forces.
- Pacific Theater (1941–1945): Employed in the initial Philippines campaign, the capture of Wake Island, and various maritime patrol missions.
- Roles: While initially a frontline torpedo/bomber, it was later used for long-range reconnaissance, training, and transport toward the end of the war.
The G3M2 was noted for its extreme range, which allowed it to act as an early intercontinental-style bomber, though it lacked self-sealing fuel tanks and armor, making it vulnerable by 1943.
