The Mitsubishi A6M3 "Zeke" (often referred to as the Model 32 or Model 22) was a primary Imperial Japanese Navy fighter used during World War II (roughly 1942–1944). It operated extensively in the Pacific Theater, including major engagements around New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Aleutians, and, later in the war, for kamikaze missions in the Philippines.

Key details regarding the usage of the A6M3:

  • Operational Theater: Used in the Pacific, specifically in campaigns around the Solomon Islands and New Guinea, to protect supply routes and in direct combat against Allied forces.
  • Key Locations: Deployed to places like Buka (Solomon Islands) and Buna (New Guinea) during the Guadalcanal campaign.
  • Specific Models & Roles: The A6M3 Model 32, with clipped wingtips for better maneuverability, was introduced in 1942. The A6M3 Model 22, with longer wings, was later introduced in 1943 to improve range.
  • Usage in Action: While initially superior in speed and agility in early 1942, by 1944, the A6M3 was increasingly used in defensive roles and as part of kamikaze, or suicide, missions.
  • Units: Operated by various Imperial Japanese Navy Air Groups, including service along the South China coast and in the Aleutians.

Although newer Allied fighters eventually outperformed it, the A6M3 played a critical, widespread role as a primary fighter for Japan during the middle stages of the Pacific war.
