The Dassault Mirage III C is a legendary French delta-wing interceptor, with the first production model flying on October 9, 1960. As the first Western European combat aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight, it served as a primary all-weather interceptor for the French Air Force, starting in 1961. Renowned for its versatility in combat, it was widely exported to countries including Israel, South Africa, and Argentina.

Key Historical Details

  • Origin: Developed from the MD 550 Mirage I, the Mirage III series was designed to meet a French Air Force requirement for a high-altitude interceptor.
  • Production: A total of 95 production units (plus prototypes) were built for the French Air Force, featuring an ATAR 09B turbojet, Cyrano radar, and two 30mm DEFA cannons.
  • Performance: It was designed to reach Mach 2.04 and could be fitted with a SEPR 841 rocket motor for extra boost, though this was rarely used.
  • Operational History: The Armee de l'Air utilized the aircraft for in-flight interception from 1961 until 1988. It gained fame through its success in the Six-Day War with the Israeli Air Force.
  • Legacy: Known as the "Shahak" in Israel, the type was a major export success, with variants operated by many nations, including Argentina, Australia, and Pakistan.

The Mirage III C was crucial in establishing Dassault Aviation's reputation for high-performance, delta-winged fighter aircraft.
