The Dassault Mirage 5, a French supersonic, single-seat attack aircraft and fighter-bomber developed in the 1960s. Derived from the Mirage III, it was originally designed at the request of the Israeli Air Force for a simplified, low-cost version optimized for clear-weather missions.

Key Characteristics & Design

  • Simplified Avionics: To reduce cost and maintenance, the air-intercept radar and associated avionics found in the Mirage IIIE were removed.
  • Increased Capacity: The removal of avionics allowed for more internal fuel storage (32% more than the Mirage IIIE) and two additional weapon pylons, for a total of seven.
  • Distinctive Appearance: It features a longer, more slender nose compared to the Mirage III, often with a pitot tube moved below the nose.
  • Armament: Standard armament includes two 30 mm DEFA cannons and up to 4,000 kg (8,800 lb) of external stores.

Variants & Global Service

A total of 582 units were built, serving in over 11 countries including Belgium, Egypt, Libya, and Pakistan.

  • Mirage 5F: The designation for the 50 aircraft originally built for Israel but embargoed by France; they eventually served with the French Air Force.
  • IAI Nesher: An Israeli-built version (using blueprints) that served during the Yom Kippur War before many were sold to Argentina as "Daggers".
  • Project ROSE: A major upgrade program for Pakistan Air Force Mirages, introducing modern avionics and FLIR sensors for night-attack capabilities.
  • Mirage 50: An evolution featuring the more powerful Atar 9K-50 engine and upgraded radar, sold primarily to Chile and Venezuela.

Operational Highlights

  • Falklands War (1982): Argentine Daggers (Neshers) were extensively used against the British fleet.
  • Pakistan Service: Pakistani Mirage 5s are modified for nuclear weapons delivery and have remained in active service, recently participating in operations like "Swift Retort" in 2019.
  • Gulf War (1991): Belgian Mirage 5s were deployed to Turkey for defensive air patrols.
