The Dassault MD-454 Mystère IV is a 1950s French transonic fighter-bomber that first flew on September 28, 1952, entering service in 1953. As an evolution of the Mystère II, it featured a new design with swept wings, serving extensively in the French, Israeli, and Indian air forces. Over 400 were built, seeing significant combat in the 1956 Suez Crisis and conflicts in the Middle East and India.
- Development:
- Developed from the Mystère II, the Mystère IV was redesigned for better transonic performance, featuring a thicker wing, redesigned fuselage, and powered controls.
- Performance: Capable of exceeding the speed of sound in a dive (first achieved in 1953), with a maximum speed of at sea level.
- Engines: Initial production models (50) used British Rolls-Royce Tay engines, while the majority were powered by the French-built Hispano-Suiza Verdon 350.
- Operational History:
- France: Served in the Armée de l'Air from 1953 through the 1980s.
- Israel: Played a crucial role in the 1956 Suez Crisis and the 1967 Six-Day War.
- India: Utilized extensively during the 1965 and 1971 conflicts, with pilots earning honors for combat actions against Pakistani aircraft.
- Variants: While the IVA was the main production fighter-bomber, others included the IVB (afterburner) and the IVN (two-seat all-weather interceptor).
The Mystère IV proved to be a reliable and versatile aircraft, bridging the gap to more advanced, fully supersonic designs like the Super Mystèr
