The Dassault MD-450 Ouragan ("Hurricane") was the first French-designed jet fighter-bomber to enter production, marking a critical resurgence for France's aviation industry post-WWII. Developed in 1947 and first flown in 1949, this straight-wing jet was operated by France (1952–1961), India (as "Toofani"), Israel, and El Salvador.
Development and History
- Origin: Developed by Marcel Dassault as a private venture, the project was later adopted by the French government, leading to a 1949 prototype flight.
- Production: The first production model flew on December 5, 1951, with deliveries to the French Air Force beginning in 1952. About 350 were built for France.
- Design: It was powered by a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet engine, often licence-built by Hispano-Suiza.
- Export Success: The Ouragan was the first French combat aircraft exported post-WWII, with 71 ordered by India (later 113) and 24 by Israel.
Operational History
- France: Used as a front-line fighter by the 12th Cambrai Wing, and for two years by the Patrouille de France aerobatics team.
- Israel: Played a major role in the Suez Crisis (1956) and the Six-Day War.
- India: Known as the "Toofani," it was used extensively during the 1950s.
- El Salvador: Operated these aircraft for a surprisingly long duration, with some in service until 1998.
