The SEPECAT Jaguar is an Anglo-French supersonic attack aircraft, developed in the mid-1960s by Breguet (later Dassault) and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for training and light tactical support. Making its maiden flight on September 8, 1968, the Jaguar entered French service in 1973 as a versatile, low-altitude strike fighter. It served until 2005, seeing action in Africa and the 1991 Gulf War.

Origins and Development (1960s)

  • Joint Venture: The project began in 1965 as a partnership between France and the UK, aimed at creating a, low-cost, supersonic trainer and tactical strike aircraft.
  • Design Evolution: Initially based on the Breguet Br 121, the design evolved significantly to meet British requirements for better supersonic performance, resulting in a more complex, capable strike aircraft than originally envisioned.
  • First Flight: The first prototype flew on September 8, 1968, piloted by Bernard Witt at Istres.
  • Production: The project was a collaboration between Breguet (later merged with Dassault) and BAC, forming SEPECAT (Société Européenne de Production de l'Avion d'École de Combat et d'Appui Tactique).

French Service and Variants

  • Deliveries: The French Air Force (Armée de l'Air) took delivery of its first production Jaguars in 1973.
  • Variants: The main French variants included the single-seat Jaguar A (Alpha) for strike missions and the two-seat Jaguar E (Echo) for training. A naval variant (Jaguar M) was tested but not adopted.
  • Role: The Jaguar was primarily utilized for ground-attack, reconnaissance, and as a tactical nuclear strike platform.

Operational History

  • "Jaguar Diplomacy": Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Jaguar was extensively deployed in Africa (e.g., Mauritania, Chad) to support French foreign policy, earning it a reputation for reliability in hot, high-intensity environments.
  • Gulf War (1991): French Jaguars were part of the coalition forces in Operation Desert Storm, flying combat missions to destroy Iraqi artillery and infrastructure.
  • Bosnia (1995): The type was used during Operation Deliberate Force.

Retirement

  • The Jaguar was retired from French Air Force service in 2005, replaced by the Dassault Rafale.
