The Chengdu J-7II was the first major production version of China's J-7 fighter family, itself derived from the Soviet Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21. Introduced in the late 1970s, it served primarily with the Chinese military and was also exported in several closely related versions.
 
Operators and Users of the J-7II
China – The principal operator. The J-7II equipped numerous units of the People's Liberation Army Air Force and later the People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force, serving as an interceptor and air-defense fighter.
Zimbabwe – Received F-7II and F-7IIN export variants, which were based on the J-7II design. These aircraft formed the backbone of Zimbabwe's fighter force for many years.
Egypt – Operated early F-7 export models derived from the J-7II series. Egypt was one of the first foreign users of the aircraft.
North Korea – Acquired large numbers of F-7 fighters related to the J-7II family and remains one of the largest operators outside China.
Other export users of J-7II-derived aircraft included Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, and Namibia, though many operated later F-7 variants rather than the original J-7II model.
