The J-7E was one of the most advanced Chinese domestic versions of the Chengdu J-7 (MiG-21 derivative), featuring the distinctive double-delta "cranked" wing for improved maneuverability. It was used primarily by China and in limited numbers by a few export customers.

Primary Operators

  • China – The largest operator by far. The J-7E served with the People's Liberation Army Air Force and the People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force. It entered service in the late 1980s and remained operational until being gradually replaced by newer fighters such as the J-10 and J-16.

Export Use

The J-7E itself was not widely exported, but its technology led to export variants such as the F-7MG, F-7PG, F-7BG, and F-7BGI. Countries that operated these related export versions included:

  • Pakistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Egypt
  • Iran
  • Myanmar
  • North Korea
  • Nigeria
  • Namibia
  • Sudan
  • Tanzania
  • Zimbabwe
  • Several other nations also operated earlier F-7 variants.

Notable Fact

The J-7E's improved wing design was so successful that it became the basis for the later J-7G, the ultimate Chinese service version of the J-7 family.
