The Shenyang J-6A was a Chinese-built version of the Soviet MiG-19 "Farmer" supersonic fighter. It served primarily as an interceptor and fighter aircraft and was one of the most widely produced combat aircraft in Chinese history.

Main Users of the J-6 / J-6A

The aircraft was used by:

  • China – The largest operator. The aircraft equipped dozens of People's Liberation Army Air Force regiments from the 1960s through the early 2000s. It was also used by the naval air arm.
  • Vietnam – Supplied during the Vietnam War and flown against U.S. aircraft.
  • Pakistan – The largest export customer, operating nearly 300 F-6 variants (export designation of the J-6). They served from the 1960s until 2002.
  • North Korea – Operated large numbers and still reportedly retains some in reserve or secondary roles.
  • Egypt – Received aircraft from China beginning in 1979.
  • Iran – Operated F-6 fighters during the 1980s.
  • Iraq – Received aircraft via Egypt and Jordan in the 1980s.
  • Albania – One of China's closest Cold War allies and a major operator.
  • Other operators included Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia.

  • Various Middle Eastern conflicts through Egyptian, Iraqi, and Iranian service.
