The Hansa-Brandenburg D.I, also known as the KD (Kampf Doppeldecker - Fighter Biplane), was a German fighter aircraft developed during World War I.

  • Design: The D.I, designed by Ernst Heinkel, was a single-seat biplane made of wood with a plywood fuselage and fabric wings.
  • "Star-Strutter" Bracing: A unique "Star-Strutter" arrangement of interplane struts was featured.
  • Handling Characteristics: The D.I had poor handling, including directional instability and difficulty recovering from spins, which led to the nickname "the Coffin".
  • Armament: The aircraft was typically armed with a single, unsynchronized machine gun on the upper wing. Some had synchronized guns.
  • Operational History: The D.I served with the Austro-Hungarian Luftfahrtruppen from late 1916 until mid-1917.
