The F-105G Thunderchief, known as the "Wild Weasel," was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force in the Vietnam War for Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD). It flew combat missions, targeting North Vietnamese surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites, based out of Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base and Takhli RTAFB, Thailand.
Key Deployment Details:
- Role: Specialized in destroying surface-to-air missile sites with anti-radiation missiles like the AGM-45 Shrike and AGM-78 Standard.
- Operational Theater: Vietnam and Southeast Asia, starting around 1967-1972.
- Squadrons: Served with the 17th Wild Weasel Squadron (17 WWS), 355th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW), and 388th TFW.
- Operational History: The G-model was a conversion from earlier F-105F models used for similar dangerous electronic counter-measure (ECM) duties, often dubbed "Wild Weasel III," says MAPS Air Museum.
- Post-Vietnam: Later served in the U.S. with units like the 35th TFW at George Air Force Base, California.
The F-105G was critical in limiting North Vietnamese air defenses, and it was renowned for taking on the dangerous "Wild Weasel" role.
